Mahashivratri’s

Mahashivratri's

Mahashivratri's fast isn't just a religious practice, but according to Ayurveda, it's a scientific way to detoxify the body and mind.
Mahashivratri falls at the time of 'Ritu Sandhi' (transition of seasons), when winter ends and summer begins

The main Ayurvedic principles related to this fast are:

- Langhanam Parama Aushadham (Fasting as Medicine):
Ayurveda's key principle is that fasting is the greatest medicine. Concept: During this time, 'Ama' (toxic waste) accumulates in the body as digestive fire (Agni) slows down due to seasonal change. Benefit: Fasting gives Agni a rest and helps burn off old toxins, cleansing the body.

- Balancing Kapha Dosha:
As winter ends, accumulated Kapha in the body starts melting, leading to colds, coughs, and lethargy. Concept: Mahashivratri's fast and jagran (night vigil) generate warmth and activate Vata-Pitta, helping balance melted Kapha.

- Increasing Sattva Guna:
According to Ayurveda, our mind is made of three gunas: Sattva (peace/knowledge), Rajas (action), and Tamas (inertia/darkness). Concept: Eating light food (falahar) and staying awake on Mahashivratri reduces Tamas Guna (sleep and lethargy) and increases Sattva Guna, leading to mental clarity and peace.

- Importance of Ratri Jagran (Biological Rhythm):
Staying awake with a straight spine on Shivratri night is important in both Ayurveda and Yoga. Concept: On this day, earth's energy naturally flows upward. Keeping the spine straight helps this energy rejuvenate our nervous system and brain.

How to Fast According to Ayurveda?

3. What to do: Consume milk and makhana to calm Pitta (heat) in the body.
4. Why: Drinking water is essential to flush out toxins.

*Important Note*: Ayurveda says fast according to your capacity. If you feel acidity or weakness, don't stay completely hungry; instead, take light fruits.
