Ritu Sandhi

What is Ritu Sandhi?

In Ayurveda, Ritu Sandhi means the transitional period between two seasons.

- It usually lasts about 7 days, when the influence of the old season decreases and the new season begins.

- During this time, the body gets a chance to adjust to the upcoming season.

Why is it beneficial for us?

Immunity tends to weaken slightly during Ritu Sandhi.
– If we take care of our diet and lifestyle at this time, the body adapts smoothly to the new season.
– This helps prevent seasonal illnesses like cold, cough, allergies, and digestive issues.
– It is also considered the best time for detoxification and shodhana (cleansing therapies).

Things to keep in mind while moving from Late Winter (Shishir Ritu) to Early Spring (Vasant Ritu):

Diet:
– In Late Winter, nourishing and oily foods (like ghee, sesame, millet) are beneficial.
– As Spring begins, shift to light, easily digestible, Kapha-reducing foods (mung beans, green vegetables, spiced soups).
– Reduce sweets, oily, and heavy foods.
Lifestyle:
– Practice regular exercise, yoga, and pranayama to maintain energy.
– Wake up early and keep sleep balanced.
– Seasonal cleansing (Shodhana like Vamana) is recommended to prepare the body for Spring.
Precautions:
– Adjust clothing according to changing weather—protect from lingering cold but avoid sudden exposure to heat.
– Drink adequate water, but avoid very cold water.
– Include seasonal fruits like guava, orange, and lemon to reduce Kapha and boost immunity.

In short, Ritu Sandhi is nature’s way of preparing our body for the next season. By following the right diet and lifestyle during this transition, we can avoid seasonal illnesses and enjoy Spring with vitality.
